報告題目:“Brain Circuits During Arithmetic Are Predictive of Real-Time Trial-Based Math Anxiety Measurement”

報告摘要:Math anxiety (MA) significantly impacts learners' academic performance. While previous neuroimaging research has provided insights into brain mechanisms of MA, they often relied on trait-like anxiety measures outside the scanner. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the neural underpinnings associated with real-time MA, assessed via post-trial ratings, during math problem-solving in adults using functional MRI and machine-learning techniques. We found a moderate correlation of real-time MA with trait-like MA and task error rate, even after controlling for generalized anxiety and arithmetic fluency. Whole-brain and region-of-interest analyses together demonstrated real-time MA to be associated with heightened activity within the default mode network and prefrontal cortex, as well as reduced activity in the right intraparietal sulcus. Notably, real-time MA also moderated the connection between brain activation and task performance during math problem-solving. These findings provide potential insights into strategies targeting MA and applications in educational contexts.

報告題目:“The Role of Relative Clause Modification on English Syntactic Processing for Chinese-English Bilingual Readers”

報告摘要:The asymmetry between subject relative clauses (SRCs) and object relative clauses (ORCs) have long been examined in research on first language (L1) and second (L2) language acquisition and processing. ORCs are processed with greater effort than SRCs by native (L1) speakers of English. Besides the asymmetry between SRCs and ORCs, RCs modifying the objects are more difficult to process than the RCs modifying the subjects, as Gibson et al (2005) found in their self-paced reading experiment. However, neither the memory-based accounts nor the expectation-based accounts seem able to fully explain the processing difference between the two modification types. In addition to syntactic cues and semantic cues, discourse cues such as information flow (old-new information chains) may also be at work in RC processing. The present study aims to investigate how Chinese (L1)-English (L2) bilinguals, compared with English native speakers, read English SRCs versus ORCs that modifies subjects versus objects. This study focuses on how structural complexity (center-embedded vs. right-branching), which are derived from different modification types, interact with discourse cues in L1 vs. L2 processing. The Mandarin Chinese natives are of great interest because the distinctions between English RCs and Chinese RCs mainly stem from their modification directions. English RCs are postnominal, following the head nouns they modify, whereas Mandarin RCs are prenominal, preceding the head nouns. The findings may also help us gain good insight about how L1 sentence processing differs from L2 sentence processing.
