報告題目:Prioritizing Sleep among Daily Life Activities: Discrepancies between Attitude and Practice

報告摘要:

With the promotion of sleep via sleep education, there is increasing recognition of the importance of sleep among the general public. However, there is no corresponding increase in their sleep time. Our study therefore aims to explore the consistency between people's prioritization of sleep among their daily life activities and their actual practice when sleep conflicts with other activities, in order to provide a direction for future sleep education programs. Using a cross-sectional on-line survey, we recruited 443 participants and found an inconsistency between reporting sleep as a priority among daily life activities and the actual behavioral practice when sleep conflicts with other activities. Our results further suggest that sleep education should not only emphasize the importance of sleep, but also provide practical solutions for when sleep conflicts with other activities.

報告題目:The role of rat prefrontal cortex in risk-dependent choice

報告摘要:

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to be critical in decision making under uncertainty, but the specific contribution of PFC subregions to risk-based decision making remains elusive. This study thus evaluated the lesion effects of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) and the medial PFC (mPFC) on risk choice in rats. In a T-maze task, a specific risk-dependent choice protocol was established for the rat to choose either small/certain or large/risky option which the expected value set is equal to one (EV=1). The high, medium, and low levels of risk were set by manipulating three different reward ratios of choice options. With a between-subject design on both the reward ratio and lesion area, the rats were randomly assigned to the experimental groups receiving excitotoxic lesion of lOFC or mPFC, or to the correspondingly sham control groups, prior to behavioral testing. For the results, the sham control rats acquired dissociable patterns of risk choice depending on the different risk levels; that is, a risk-prone pattern in low-risk condition, but risk-averse patterns appeared as the risk level increased. As compared to the sham controls, no profound change was observed from the rats with a mPFC lesion. In contrast, there was a risk-averse pattern of choice developed after the lOFC lesion. These results support the notion of differential involvement of the lOFC and mPFC in risk-based decision making, and further suggests that the lOFC contributes to the acquisition of risk-dependent choice on a T-maze risk-dependent choice.
