摘要
Numerous studies have showed that older adults with higher levels of social connectedness have better physical health. However, although the association between social connectedness and health is well-documented, the biosocial process through which social connectedness affects health remain unclear. This study aims to fill this gap in research by examining the role of social connectedness on physiological dysregulation, a strong predictor of disease onset and physical illness. Using innovative longitudinal data with biomarkers and multiple measures of social connectedness, results from fixed-effects model show that both interpersonal and community social ties are key predictors of older adults’ physiological regulation. The association remains after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics, perceived social support, and social stress. Implications for theories and practices are discussed.
