講題:Becoming a native face expert: A perceptual learning perspective on the development of the other-race effect in Taiwanese infants and children.

演講摘要:

The other-race effect (ORE) in face perception has been reliably demonstrated across ethnicities and experimental paradigm. Underpinned by interracial adoption studies as well as many others, ORE is attributed to a lack of visual experience with other-race faces. In the last decade, cross-cultural developmental studies have pointed to an early onset of the ORE in the first year of life, and favored the perceptual narrowing view--declined sensitivities to rarely exposed face stimuli. In the first part of my talk, I will introduce an alternative view, perceptual learning, manifested by improved sensitivity for frequently exposed own-race faces. We explored Taiwanese infants’ abilities to discriminate among Taiwanese, Caucasian, and Philippine faces and found evidence supporting perceptual learning: infants’ ability to discriminate own-race faces emerges at 4 months and continues to refine, while their ability to discriminate other-race faces emerges between 6 to 9 months and remains at 9 months.

 

The second part of my talk will focus on the ORE in childhood. Inspired by Walker & Tanaka's (2003) morphing face paradigm, we adopted a sequential face matching the task to test the encoding advantage hypothesis in 6- to 12-yr-old school-aged Taiwanese children and adults as a comparison. Using precisely controlled Asian and Caucasian morphing faces, we showed that adults exhibited a smaller discrimination threshold in the Asian condition than in the Caucasian one, supporting the encoding advantage hypothesis. However, children aged 5-8 years did not yet exhibit the own-race advantage; it appeared to emerge around age 9-10 and became apparent around age 11-12. In sum, school-aged children made gradual progress in discriminating own-race faces but their ability to differentiate other-race faces remained relatively unchanged. In the last part of the talk, I will discuss the implication and theoretical importance of the overall pattern of results, and my future research directions.
